News - Who will do the work? The economics of migration: CRC are investigating the possibility that some rural communities and businesses could be vulnerable to an economic shock if there was to be a sudden slowdown or even a reversal of the current influx of migrant workers.

Defra
News - Good progress on Environmental Stewardship: Over 5 million hectares of land in England are now covered by schemes which aim to conserve our valuable landscape and its wildlife, according to a report published by Defra and Natural England today. Environmental Stewardship is a Government-funded scheme open to all farmers, which funds the delivery of environmental benefits through agriculture.

Publication – Improving your performance: A guide to Performance Hub resources, summarising all the publications produced during the lifetime of the Hub, from 2005 to 2008. It includes a range of 'how to' guides and research reports on what works in performance, as well as what performance support the sector needs.

Response - The challenges and opportunities facing UK postal services: The Government announced an independent review of the UK postal services sector in December 2007. The review has published its initial response to evidence relating to its first two terms of reference. If you have an interest in the future of the UK postal service, the review panel would like to hear from you before the 19 May 2008 on terms of reference.
Digital switchover
Report - Report on the first digital TV switchover: Whitehaven/Copeland, Cumbria: Digital UK has published a report on the UK’s first digital television switchover, highlighting lessons to be applied across the rest of the country as analogue signals are turned off over the next four years.
Asset development
Publication – Asset Development: High Peak CVS has published five fact sheets on the theme of asset development, focusing particularly on hard assets such as property and land. Titles are: Developing and Maximising the Use of a Community Building; The Pros and Cons of Leading and Ownership; Risk Reduction in Managing a Community Building; Making the Figures Add Up; and Selling the Case for an Asset Transfer.

News - 15 local areas to lead Pathfinder projects supporting vulnerable families: Children and Families Minister, Beverley Hughes has announced the details of a £16m ‘Family Pathfinder’ programme – naming 15 local areas where disadvantaged families will be offered intensive help and support.

Publication – Working together: Listening to the voices of children and young people: This guidance promotes the participation of children and young people in decision-making in school, local authority and related settings and provides advice on the principles and practice that support such involvement.

Environment
News - Natural England announces extra £72m for the natural environment: Natural England has announced that an additional £72m will be spent on the natural environment this year. Further to an additional £68m for green farming schemes, Natural England has announced that it will allocate an extra £4m this year towards protecting and enhancing the marine environment, improving biodiversity and researching renewable energy options in the Severn Barrage.
Publication – Policy Exchange: Government missing its own targets on the environment: A new report by the thinktank, Policy Exchange, reveals that despite promising to “put concern for the environment at the heart of policy-making” the Government looks likely to miss over half of the green targets it has set since 1997.
Publication - Greenwash Guide: ‘Greenwash’ is the name Futerra give to the growth of the new ‘green pound’ with consumers becoming increasingly mistrustful of green claims. The report, based on primary research, is packed with research, analysis and recommendations.
Coastal access
Event - CoastNet conference on Coastal Access: In this one-day conference CoastNet will look beyond the detail of the draft Marine Bill, containing access provisions to the English coast. It will explore the scope of possible community benefits that might arise from improved coastal access, and to question how peoples legitimate concerns might be taken into account. Date: 19 June 2008. Venue: The Gala Theatre, Durham.
