Case Studies - Social Inclusion

RCAN members work on a range of projects and initiatives in respect of supporting communities to help overcome social exclusion. These range from befriending schemes aimed at the isolated and elderly to specific support for other groups in rural areas such as Gypsies and Travellers, migrant workers and children.

Norfolk RCC - Durable outdoor games for children in Isolated rural communities

Norfolk Rural Community Council’s Big Book of Games Project will develop a series of larger than life 'Play Books' as durable fixtures in ten community green spaces across South Norfolk. The Big Book of Games is an innovative project, promising exciting opportunities for children of all abilities across South Norfolk to enjoy stimulating new play provision right on their doorstep.

Suffolk ACRE - Good Neighbour Scheme

Suffolk ACRE launched its Good Neighbour Scheme in July 2003 as a way of tackling social exclusion and rural isolation by creating a network of sustainable, individual Good Neighbour Schemes around the county.

The Community Development Agency for Hertforshire - Play bus for Gypsies

Community Development Agency for Hertfordshire (CDA for Herts) was able to work child playing with bricks photographed from abovewith the local gypsy community and provide services to aid their ‘inclusion’ in to local communities across the county. Many children on Gypsy and Traveller sites for reasons of lifestyle, culture, isolation and discrimination do not have access to early year facilities within the settled community and as a result, their education suffers because they have not had the opportunity to learn and develop the skills needed at an early age. read more about Play bus

Community Council of Shropshire - Signposting scheme for the over 65s

Signpost is a single gateway to a range of services designed to help people over the age of 65 remain in their own homes supported by local community services.

The Signpost service is for residents who may have unmet needs indicated by a poorstandard of living, inadequate basics that are required to help keep them safe, warm, with sufficient nutrition and acceptable level of financial security.

Community Council for Devon - Support to the migrant worker community

The aim of the Safer Devon Migrant Worker Hubs project was to engage with 7 ‘hubs’ in Devon which would provide support and access to the Migrant Worker community. A Migrant Worker Multi-Agency Task Group has been established to develop a coordinated response to the challenges this influx of Migrant Workers creates. The Task Group represents a wide range of statutory, private and voluntary sector organisations.
