ACRE provides the secretariat for the Rural Coalition. The coalition, chaired by Margaret Clark CBE, comprises 12 members who subscribe to a vision for a living and working countryside. The policies required to achieve that vision are set out in The Rural Challenge 2015.
Margaret Clark CBE was appointed as the Chair of the Rural Coalition in April 2016, succeeding Lord Robin Teverson. Her career has been spent in the field of rural policy and practice, working in national government agencies concerned with rural development and helping to build sustainable rural communities. Margaret was responsible for leading the team to establish the Commission for Rural Communities (CRC) and, until July 2007, was a founding director.
Until September 2015, Margaret was a board member of the Hastoe Housing Group (the leading provider of rural social housing) from 1998 and its chair from July 2008. She is currently chair of the Plunkett Foundation and a member of the Rural England CIC, set up by the Rural Services Network to identify rural research needs. In addition she is also a board member of CPRE and was awarded a CBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours List for services to rural communities.
Bishop Alan Smith, The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of St Albans is the President of the Rural Coalition. He is an active member of the House of Lords and has spoken on a wide range of issues affecting rural communities, in particular the need for sustainable rural communities that are able to support residents of all ages.
