Charity Status

90% of halls responding to ACRE's 2009 survey are registered charities. 88% have volunteer management committees that include representatives of users. These volunteers, or charity trustees, have a duty to manage the property for the purposes set out in their governing documentation.

The Charity Commission is the government organisation responsible for regulating and registering charities in England and Wales. The Commission assists charities to use their resources more effectively by providing the best possible regulations and advice. You should contact the Commission direct for support and advice that you need. Telephone 0845 300 0218 or visit the Charity Commission website

A hall charity has to comply with the accounting procedures set down by the Charity Commission. Contact your adviser if you need assistance.
