Local Food

A number of RCAN members are working with communities to help them set up local food schemes, the following are some examples of this work.

Surrey Community Action has supported Grace and Flavour a not-for-profit horticultural co-operative which has the aim of helping local people in East & West Horsley to grow both fruit and vegetables for the local community and themselves on a 3 acre plot.

Rural Community Action Nottinghamshire is supporting 4 communities to access land and funding to develop allotments and community growing facilities, 3 of which are now in existence. They are also leading on a Community Growing project in Broxtowe, alongside the County Council, Borough Council and the PCT.

Action in Rural Sussex (AiRs) is running a a three year project that is planting 36 school and community orchards with rare Sussex apples and running related training courses and events, through which they aim to support local initiatives that increase biodiversity and access to locally grown fruit. They also run Young Cooks on Farms projects, addressing the gulf between farmers and their local communities, and connecting with Food Technology curriculums in secondary schools via farm visits, food production experience and cookery lessons.

Community Council for Devon’s ‘Home Grown – Community Owned’ (HogCO) project is already working with over 20 groups across rural Devon, helping them with their own food growing projects. Home Grown - Community Owned (HogCO) is a five year programme working with communities across rural Devon (excluding Exeter, Torbay and Plymouth) to support local food projects. They are helping groups join together to develop skills and seek opportunities to grow their own food.
