Ministerial Task Force

The Ministerial Task Force on the role of the Third Sector in addressing Climate Change, the Environment and Sustainable Development was convened in April 2009. A number of government departments and leading national third sector organisations, including ACRE worked together to produce a report which explores how charities and not for profit organisations can contribute to addressing future global and local challenges.

The recommendation on the role of infrastructure bodies in pursuing the objectives of the Ministerial Task Force Report drew heavily on ACRE’s own experience of supporting and encouraging higher performance of its members in addressing climate change issues.

The report covers the role of the sector in providing leadership and support and in developing green jobs and more sustainable procurement practices within public service delivery. It recognises that, although climate change has dominated the work of many environmental groups, large numbers of organisations involved in supporting social and community action are not yet fully engaged. A major section of the report tackles how best to ensure that, at local level, local government, public service agencies and third sector organisations that support community action can work in partnership to strengthen community-based activity and achieve a step change in outcomes that help meet future challenges.

ACRE and the Rural Community Action Network have a long history in helping communities adapt to climate change and plan for a more sustainable and resilient future. The report’s vision of how this might be enhanced provides the opportunity to explore and develop new ideas and new solutions.
