Example Reports - Evidencing Rural Need

This page shows examples of the wide range of reports available including those on rural deprivation, profiles of areas such as villages, parishes and market towns, the rural economy and how easy (or more likely, not) is it to access services. This project is ongoing and we are planning to develop further reports in the near future. The latest reports (February 2012) are enhanced rural place profiles, an example of which is featured below.

The reports are the property of the Rural Community Action Network (RCAN). However if you are interested in reports for your area either as an organisation or members of the public then please contact your local RCAN member to discuss having access to them.

Currently there are six types of report available with an example of each shown below:

1. Rural share of deprivation

2. Most deprived rural areas

3. Rural Place Profiles (New and Updated February 2012)

  • For parishes, villages and market towns (settlements' defined by the Office for National Statistics)
  • Ideal for support of Community Led (parish) Planning
  • Information on population and how it is changing, its health and levels of disability, employment and skills, the types and affordability of local housing as well as transport and access to services
  • Quantitative evidence for smaller rural communities

4. Who's there: Workplace and Daytime Profiles

5. Rural Economy

  • explores employment and jobs in rural areas including employment rates and jobs by sector and occupation.

  • sets out the strength of the local economy, including the number, type and size of local business units, and levels of small and large businesses.

  • highlights levels of unemployment and worklessness in the local rural economy, showing which groups (age and gender) are most likely to be receiving out-of-work benefits.
  • Developed for: LA (district, unitary,county) and Parliamentary Constituencies

6. Access to Services

  • explores distance to services in rural areas, including key themes such as health and education.
  • looks at travel times to key services by walking and public transport, highlighting hotspots with the greatest travel times to key services.
  • highlights rural areas with high proportions of households lacking access to private transport (cars or vans). Breakdowns of car ownership for key equalities groups is also included.
  • Developed for: LA (district, unitary,county) and Parliamentary Constituencies
